Your engine will last longer with the new Shell nitrogen enriched gasoline
Text sourced from Shell Canada Nitrogen is a key element within the active cleaning molecule in the new fuel. By enriching the cleaning molecule with nitrogen, it is not only more effective but is significantly more stable at the higher temperatures common in modern engines, such as direct fuel-injection gasoline engines. The increased stability helps the molecule work under much tougher engine conditions by resisting thermal breakdown better than conventional cleaning additives. "At Shell, our Passionate Experts are dedicated to helping motorists get the most out of every drop of gasoline," said Jens Mueller-Belau, Fuels Portfolio and Category Manager North America, Shell Retail. "With Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, our scientists have increased the effectiveness of our cleaning additive, offering consumers our most advanced technology ever." In addition to developing this new gasoline with the consumer in mind, Shell worked with car manufacturers on research and development projects to gain understanding of challenges related to engine technology changes. These insights, along with fuels technology leadership and a strong research and development program, help Shell continually improve and differentiate its products. Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines were tested in laboratories, independent testing facilities and on the road, accumulating more than 800,000 kilometres in various vehicles and engines—including conventional, turbo-charged, and direct fuel-injection gasoline engines, hybrids, newer vehicles with low mileage, and older vehicles with high mileage. Shell scientists also used innovative testing technologies such as dual-fuel engines to conduct head-to-head comparisons with other lower-quality gasolines. In these tests, split engines simultaneously ran on different types of gasoline in order to collect data under the exact same conditions. The results of these head-to-head comparisons showed the Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines are more effective than lower-quality gasolines in protecting against the build-up of harmful engine gunk. "In today’s tough economy, Canadian drivers are concerned about protecting their vehicle because it’s one of their largest investments," said Mueller-Belau. "We want to help protect that investment. That’s why we’re educating consumers that there is a difference in the gasoline they choose. Using lower-quality gasolines can result in gunky build-up on critical engine parts, negatively impacting engine performance. Shell gasolines help drivers say ‘No’ to gunk." The Nitrogen Enriched formula helps prevent gunk build-up more effectively than gasolines containing only the minimum amount of cleaning agents as required by national Canadian fuel standards. The new cleaning system is certified to meet the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standard – a voluntary standard designated by some of the world’s top automakers (Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen) to raise the bar on fuel quality beyond minimum requirements. Industry research confirms that clean engines help vehicles perform at their best. In addition, Shell V-Power® premium gasoline provides maximum protection with the highest concentration of the Nitrogen Enriched cleaning system and more than five times the minimum amount of cleaning agents required by national fuel standards in Canada. It is designed to seek and destroy engine gunk even faster than regular Shell gasoline, providing maximum protection to help vehicles maintain peak performance. Shell is supporting the launch of Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines with a national marketing campaign, including national television, print, transit and online advertising, as well as point-of-purchase signage at Shell-branded stations nationwide. The new campaign builds on the current Passionate Experts platform, focusing on the company’s commitment to fuel quality and passion for developing innovative new products. As well, Shell will make its best-ever AIR MILES offer during the launch period. From May 4 to July 12, 2009, Shell customers will receive 10 times bonus AIR MILES reward miles on Shell V-Power® Gasoline and Shell V-Power Ô Diesel, and five times bonus reward miles on Shell Bronze and Silver grades and Shell Diesel."At Shell, we believe it’s important to educate consumers that all gasolines are not the same—high-quality gasoline can make a difference in vehicles," said Diana Hamadeh, Shell Canada Communication Manager. "We’re dedicated to continuous product improvement and innovation, and to helping consumers get the most out of every drop of gasoline." Volvo XC60 crossover will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price that starts at $45,495
City Safety is active at speeds below 30 km/h and utilizes laser sensors mounted on the windshield near the rear-view mirror to monitor up to 10 meters in front of the XC60. If a collision with a vehicle in front becomes imminent and the driver takes no action, City Safety automatically applies up to 50 percent braking power. If the speed differential between the XC60 and the vehicle in front is less than 15 km/h, it’s possible that a collision can be avoided. With a speed differential between 16 km/h and 30 km/h, the goal is to reduce the collision severity as much as possible. While City Safety represents a major step forward in automotive safety research and development, the XC60 also represents the next step in the company’s design evolution. The XC60 has been styled to deliver expressive road presence with a combination of concave and convex body panels, a prominent Volvo iron mark logo in the grille, aggressive shoulders, a dynamic profile, instantly recognizable LED front position lights and unique tail lights. In profile, the lower half of the XC60 exudes the rugged performance of the company’s XC-range of vehicles while the top half has been designed to mimic the appearance of a coupe. For the interior, the driver will find a console – including the company’s now-familiar floating centre stack – angled slightly toward their seat. The rear seats fold flat in 40/20/40 sections and the front passenger seat can also be folded for cargo versatility. For customers looking to personalize their vehicle, the XC60 can be ordered with either two-tone or single-tone leather seats. Launching with one engine, the XC60 will be equipped with a 3.0-litre, in-line six cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering 281 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque. Porsche has saved Panamera's debut for Auto Shanghai 2009 in April
Text sourced from Porsche Canada: Klaus Berning, Executive Vice-President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG, expressed a clear view at the world debut: “Introducing the Panamera, we are entering a market segment completely new for our customers and we are once again consistently expanding our model portfolio.” “The crucial task for our engineers was to combine Porsche’s sporting DNA with all the spaciousness and driving comfort of a luxurious sedan,” said Wolfgang Durheimer, Porsche’s executive vice president of research and development and member of the supervisory board. “The Panamera is an alternative car concept for the premium customer, and while competing with established vehicles in the premium class, it will be a clear segment leader in terms of performance, driving dynamics and efficiency.” The Panamera is Porsche’s fourth model line, joining the 911, Boxster/Cayman and Cayenne. It is the first premium car with an automatically-shifting double-clutch transmission and features an engine start/stop system that saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a stop light. All engines have advanced and fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), as well. Initially offered in three versions – the 400-horsepower Panamera S and all-wheel drive Panamera 4S as well as the 500-horsepower, twin-turbocharged all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo – the new Panamera provides Porsche performance and quality as well as a level of comfort that has been absent among high-performance cars. All Canadian Panameras feature the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, delivering ultra-fast gearshifts, smoothness and outstanding fuel efficiency when compared to a conventional automatic transmission. The Panamera S, for example, consumes just 10.8 L/100 km in the New European Driving Cycle. From the beginning, the Panamera project raised significant technical challenges for Porsche as it presented several engineering conflicts of interest. It had to have silhouette of a coupe, yet offer four full-size seats with a generous interior space and luggage room. It had to set the performance standard in its class, yet offer best-in-class fuel efficiency. It had to provide Porsche driving dynamics and performance and the comfort of a luxury sedan. And it had to have a driver’s cockpit typical of a sports car as well as a top-quality luxurious interior with the equipment expected in the premium sedan segment. The Panamera body is a synthesis of lightweight sports car technology, superior comfort, spaciousness, and efficient aerodynamics. To create its lightweight structure, Porsche employs advanced production methods and all kinds of steel grades as well as aluminum, magnesium and plastics. The Panamera’s structure allows for two full-size rear seats that set new standards in the luxury performance class in terms of both comfort and adjustability. The Panamera also comes with a highly functional, variable luggage compartment. The rear backrests fold forward individually, providing up to 1,263 L of luggage capacity. One highlight and another innovation is the active four-way rear spoiler on the Panamera Turbo. Through its management of control angles and surface geometry geared to driving conditions, the spoiler optimizes the car’s aerodynamics and performance. The Panamera chassis and suspension is not a compromise between sporting performance and superior comfort, but rather a combination of the two. In its basic setting it offers a very high level of driving comfort, yet at a touch of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) button, it turns into a thoroughbred sports suspension. A new adaptive air suspension, standard on Panamera Turbo and optional on other models, can also provide extra air volume on demand, offering a greater variation of sport and comfort. Optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), with two active anti-roll bars, further enhances driving dynamics and comfort. The optional Sport Chrono Packages enable the driver to choose, at the touch of a button, high-performance configurations for the engine, drivetrain and suspension systems, including Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with its fully-controlled all-wheel drive. PTM is standard on both the Panamera 4S and Turbo.Initially, Panameras will be available with a choice of two V8 engines, standard seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmissions and rear- or all-wheel drive. All engines feature Porsche Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) for highest efficiency. For additional fuel savings, all Panameras include an engine stop-start function that can turn off and restart the engine at certain times, like when stopped at an intersection. The rear-wheel drive Panamera S has a 400-horsepower, 4.8-litre V8 engine that can propel it from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 283 km/h; the MSRP is $115,100. The all-wheel drive Panamera 4S receives the same powerplant. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, achieves a top track speed of 282 km/h and has an MSRP of $120,300. At the top of the lineup is the Panamera Turbo, with a 500-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.8-litre V8. Also featuring the new PDK transmission, the all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo sets a breathtaking 0-to-100 time of 4.2 seconds and a top track speed of 303 km/h. The Panamera Turbo has an MSRP of $155,000. The four-door Panamera combines a wide range of seemingly contradictory characteristics. It comes with all the sporting and dynamic characteristics of a genuine Porsche along with a very high standard of comfort. Despite its low and sleek coupé silhouette, the Panamera offers ample space for four passengers and a versatile cargo area for a substantial amount of luggage. The Panamera also features engines with excellent fuel efficiency along with outstanding performance. All power units in the Panamera are modern V-engines with either six or eight cylinders covering a power range from 300–500 bhp and all feature Direct Fuel Injection. Superior power and torque are combined with excellent fuel economy and low exhaust emissions. The Panamera will debut with two engines, a naturally-aspirated V8 and a V8 featuring twin-turbocharger technology; V6 models will follow later. Depending on the model, power is transmitted by a six-speed manual gearbox or Porsche’s new seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) Double-Clutch Gearbox. This gives the Panamera both a particularly sporting and an extra-comfortable character on the road. As an option, the Panamera will be available with Porsche’s Sports Chrono Package, giving the car even more sporting and dynamic engine and gearshift characteristics and enhancing the performance of the Panamera to an even higher level. In Sport Plus Mode, the air suspension lowers the entire car down to the road, giving the Panamera increased aerodynamic efficiency and lowering its centre of gravity to enhance driving safety and reduce fuel consumption. Optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) actively compensates for body roll and improves the car’s ride on bumpy roads. Offering the premium customer a new type of vehicle, the Panamera is a four-seater Gran Turismo that combines dynamic performance and superior elegance and is set to achieve the same outstanding position that the 911, the Cayenne, the Boxster, and the Cayman already hold in their respective segments. While competing with well-established models in the premium class, the Panamera is the segment leader in terms of performance, driving dynamics and efficiency. Indeed, these have always been Porsche’s core competences, since efficient, high-performance engines, lightweight engineering and optimised aerodynamics have always been crucial in motorsport. For the first time, the Panamera combines this DNA of Porsche and the emotional character of a sports car with the superior space and comfort of an outstanding luxury performance saloon, creating a unique Gran Turismo in the process. The unique combination of comfort, performance and efficiency offered by the Panamera begins with the powertrain: it comes exclusively with high-tech power units featuring advanced and fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection. The consistent optimisation of friction on these engines is further enhanced by innovations such as map-controlled coolant/temperature management, as well as ancillary units with enhanced efficiency. With the seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission, Porsche offers a double-clutch gearbox for the first time in this market segment, contributing both to enhanced fuel economy and to an even higher standard of sporting performance. Far superior to a conventional automatic transmission in its efficiency, PDK is able to save even more fuel through its long, overdrive-like top gear. At the same time, it offers outstanding performance with driving dynamics typical of Porsche through its optimum gear increments and unparalleled, ultra-fast gearshift without any interruption of engine power. Yet a further milestone is the first start/stop system in a premium car with an automatic transmission. In conjunction with other specific improvements enhancing the efficiency of the overall vehicle – such as tires with low rolling resistance and disc brakes optimized to reduce residual brake forces – the Panamera S with achieves just 10.8 litres/100 kilometres on the New European Driving Cycle – and it does so despite the car’s superior performance. The chassis and suspension of the Panamera is not a compromise between sporting performance and superior comfort, but rather a combination of the two. In its basic setting it offers a high standard of comfort. But, at the touch of a button on the active PASM damper system, it turns into a thoroughbred sports suspension. Another innovation is the adaptive air suspension which can add extra volume when required – standard on the Turbo and optional on other models. It allows for an even wider range of sporting and comfort-oriented qualities. Driving dynamics and comfort may also be enhanced by active PDCC stability control, available in combination with an electronically-controlled rear axle differential. Through the Sport Plus button, the optional Sports Chrono Packages enable the driver to choose the uncompromising high-performance set-up of all drivetrain and suspension systems, including Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with its fully-controlled all-wheel drive. PTM comes as standard in both the Panamera 4S and the Panamera Turbo. The Panamera’s body is the synthesis of lightweight sports car technology with superior comfort, space and efficient aerodynamics. The most advanced production methods and materials are used on the body of the Panamera. These include all kinds of steel grades, light alloys such as aluminum and magnesium, as well as plastics. The lightweight doors feature a load-bearing structure made of laser-treated pressure-cast aluminum, an aluminum outer skin and door window frames made of thin-walled pressure-cast magnesium. Thanks to this intelligent lightweight structure, the Panamera S, for example, weighs just 1,770 kg. The rear seats set new standards for both comfort and variability. Perfectly contoured as single seats, they offer maximum comfort through their wide range of electrical adjustment as well as headrests tailored to the seats and optional seat climate controls. The Panamera also comes with a highly functional, variable luggage compartment. Tilting forward individually, the rear seatbacks with additional through-loading provide luggage capacity of up to 1,263 litres and enable a perfectly flat floor. The Panamera is the first car in its segment with a complete aerodynamic under-body cover, extending around the drivetrain tunnel and rear-end silencers. This reduces both air resistance and lift forces on the axles, which means lower fuel consumption and higher driving dynamics. The visible highlight of the aerodynamic package is the active four-way rear spoiler on the Panamera Turbo. Through its efficient management of control angles and surface geometry geared to driving conditions, the rear spoiler optimizes the car’s aerodynamics and performance. Achieving a perfect balance of sound on the exhaust system, the air intake and engine as well as the car’s aeroacoustics, Porsche’s development engineers have given the Panamera a harmonious, characteristic sound, bringing together seemingly contradictory requirements. Aeroacoustics were analyzed on a clay model right from the start, then were optimized by way of numerous technical improvements. The result is a low level of noise appropriate for the luxury performance segment. At the same time, the typical Porsche sound of power and dynamism comes out clearly when accelerating. Thus, the Panamera’s acoustic signature extends from silent cruising all the way to powerful emotion during sporty driving. Using both new and proven technologies, Porsche’s engineers in Weissach have succeeded in solving all conflicts of interest in developing the Panamera. The engines are powerful and dynamic, efficient and clean. The Panamera combines comfortable touring characteristics with sports motoring so typical of Porsche. And despite the car’s dynamic proportions and coupé-like silhouette, the interior offers outstanding luxury, function and versatility. The Porsche Panamera goes on sale in Canada this October, with pricing for the rear-wheel drive Panamera S starting at $115,100. The all-wheel drive Panamera 4S has an MSRP of $120,300 and the Panamera Turbo, with a 500-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V8 has an MSRP of $155,000.

Mercedes-Benz will
introduce Adaptive High-Beam Assistant and Attention Assist in near future
Text sourced from Mercedes-Benz Canada:
Attention Assist monitors the driving behaviour of the driver, generating an individual driver profile which is constantly compared to a flow of sensor data. This continuous monitoring is important, so that the system can recognise the driver's transition from alertness to drowsiness and warn him in good time. In addition to the vehicle speed and linear/lateral acceleration, the Mercedes system also registers e.g. steering wheel movements, indicator and pedal operation, plus a number of specific control operations and external influences such as side winds or uneven road surfaces. Monitoring the driver's steering behaviour has proved to be particularly relevant, as an overtired driver has difficulty in keeping the vehicle precisely on track. He makes minor steering errors which are often quickly corrected in a characteristic manner. The heart of the Mercedes system is an extremely sensitive sensor that enables the steering movements and their speed to be monitored very precisely. During the first few minutes of each journey, Attention Assist uses these data to compile an individual driver behaviour pattern which is constantly compared with the current steering behaviour and driving situation by the onboard electronic control unit. This enables the system to recognise the typical signs of overtiredness and warn the driver accordingly. This is done by an acoustic signal and a display in the instrument cluster with the clear-cut advice: "Attention Assist. Break!"

Chevrolet Traverse crossover will have a starting price of $34,655 The all-new 2009 Traverse crossover, available at Chevrolet dealers this fall, starts at $34,655 MSRP. The Traverse is a stylish, well-equipped crossover that can still carry part of the hockey team and their gear, but with fuel consumption typical of smaller vehicles. Traverse was recently awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick for 2008. This significant safety award results from the Traverse meeting the Institute’s highest rating for performance in its demanding front, side and rear impacts in addition to providing standard Stabilitrak, GM’s electronic stability control system. With seating for up to 8 adults, the Traverse (FWD) achieves an impressive 8.4 L/100km of highway and 12.7 L/100km city fuel consumption thanks in large part to its sophisticated 3.6L engine with direct injection and variable valve timing technologies. Producing 281-horsepower it delivers better-than-expected fuel consumption and a 25-percent reduction in cold-start emissions. The 3.6L engine is mated to the fuel-saving Hydra-Matic 6T75 six-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai Accent named the most-dependent sub-compact by J. D. Power and Associates
"I don’t mind being seen as the ‘cheap and cheerful’ car company as long as people understand that at Hyundai, ‘cheap’ does not mean low in quality," said John Vernile, vice president, sales and marketing, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. "Our results in this study – for both the Accent and for the brand overall – show that our continued dedication to quality is paying off for consumers." The Hyundai Accent scored 187 problems per 100 vehicles (pp100), which is 20% better than the segment average of 234 pp100, and which enabled the vehicle to surpass traditionally accepted quality leader Toyota’s Scion xA. This achievement is due to Hyundai’s "Drive Defects to Zero" campaign that the company launched in 1999. For the past nine years, the company has focused on improving vehicle quality which has resulted in strong Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability scores from J. D. Power and Associates and recognition from other industry watchers as well. Accent is a solid demonstration of the "Drive Defects to Zero" campaign’s success. In the last three years of the study, Accent has steadily improved its problems per 100 vehicles score, with a 28-point improvement over 2007 results. Enhancements in the engine, climate controls and seating categories contributed to this year’s success for the Accent. Additionally, the Hyundai Accent ranks better than the segment average in important areas such as engine power, suspension and engine noise, and braking power. As an overall brand, Hyundai also made dramatic improvements in its dependability scores in this year’s VDS. Ahead of the industry average, Hyundai placed 13th among the 38 nameplates measured in the study, an improvement of eight positions versus 2007. In the non-premium segment, Hyundai also made a significant seven-position jump, moving to sixth place this year from 13th in 2007. With each product in the Hyundai portfolio improving over last year, Hyundai now ranks with the likes of Honda and Toyota when both Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability are compared. A significant improvement in problems per 100 vehicles over the entire lineup spurred the brand’s success. Hyundai achieved a 14 per cent improvement over 2007, a near tripling of the industry average. The VDS study measures problem symptoms of three-year-old vehicles primarily in categories such as ride, handling, braking, temperate controls, seats, engine performance, driving dynamics and interior and exterior durability. The VDS is one of three J.D. Power and Associates quality studies, along with the Initial Quality Study (IQS) that measures quality after 90 days of ownership, and the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study that measures customer perceptions on the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles.
