Chassis:
Rather than using unibody construction as is
common nowadays, Sorento adopts a body-on-frame construction for better off-road
performance. Ladder frame allows engineer to incorporate a Low Range Transfer
Case and provides better wheel articulation, advantages when it's required to
traverse jungle paths and hilly climbs.
4WD System:
LX and EX models have different 4WD modes. In
LX model, driver can select between rear-wheel drive only, 4-wheel drive or Low
Range 4-wheel drive. In EX, selection is either automatic or Low Range 4-wheel
drive. When in "auto", power delivery to front and rear varies with
rear wheels getting 100% of power in normal road condition to maximum of 50% to
the front in adverse conditions.
Engine:
3497 cc V6, 195 hp @ 5500 rpm, 218 lb-ft @ 3000
rpm, 10.0:1 Compression Ratio
With probably the biggest engine in its class, the Sorento picks up its paces
rapidly and is also surprisingly quiet at high speeds. Although acceleration
figures are not available, from seat-of-the-pants feel, the Kia Sorento seems to
sprint to 100 km/h faster than all its competitors, no matter it's Toyota's
Highlander V6, Honda CR-V, Saturn VUE or Jeep Liberty. Nissan's Xterra S/C is
probably the closest in terms of power. Towing capacity is 5000 lb.
The standard 4-speed automatic transmission is also smooth and ratios well
matched to the engine. At a vehicle speed of 100 km/h, engine rpm is
approximately 2500.
